A Movie Death-Wish

Today I read an article on Yahoo!News about a large array of sequels being made of many well-loved movies. For instance, we viewers should be expecting sequels of Toy Story, Cars, Transformers, Ghostbusters, Men in Black, and Spiderman just to name a few. Can I be one of the first to publicly proclaim that I am tired of sequels? I am tired of seeing my favorite movies ruined by adding a second edition. For example: The Mummy wasn’t completely annihilated by The Mummy Returns, but The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor totally buried it. The Matrix was an amazing story, but the 2nd and 3rd were overkill. And don’t even get me started on the massive vault full of unnecessary Disney sequels. I feel like Disney’s favorite number is three – Little Mermaid 3, Cinderella 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3…

I feel like the writers of these films resort to making sequels and three-quels of the movies that made them big because they have exhausted their creative reserves. How uncreative is that? All it does is dig them a deeper hole and label them as wash-ups and wannabes. And seriously, who wants to see their favorite stories eternally prolonged and driven into the ground? I personally would much rather have my fav film end in a massive cliff hanger than be strung out until it dissipates. I can handle a sequel here and there, but three-quels are unnecessary. All I know, is three is definitely NOT the magic number.
